Lesson analysis 9th October Blocking Scenes 3 & 4

In this lesson, we worked on blocking scene 3 and scene 4. In both these scenes I play the prince. We did this in the dance studio so it was hard to imagine it being outside especially as the size of the dance studio is different to outside.

I think that my biggest challenge is this scene was sorting out the movements for 'Agony'. We tried out some different movements that we felt didn't work and eventually we decided on the movements that did work. The movements involve me and R's Prince both having almost a side of the stage each with my side being stage left. When we have our singing parts individually, we both walk towards the audience on our side and when the other is singing we stand more towards the middle looking upset at the fact we can't get our women. At the part when we both sing we are together looking at each other holding hands, and showing our pain to each other with our facial expression. We then split off to our sides again to say our lines 'always ten steps behind' and the at 'I must have her to wife' we both go back to each other after having been 'stabbed' so we are stumbling back to the middle and then sing our last line looking into the distance on our side of the stage.

During scene 4 the hardest part for me was blocking where we would all stand at during the part when the Baker, Baker's wife, Steward and Me as Cinderella's Prince. It was hard to get it so that everybody could be seen at it would still work when Jack's Mother comes on. We decided that when I first come on Steward and myself would be on stage left and Baker and Baker's wife would be on stage right, and when the beanstalk falls and the ground shakes, we would all end up in a sort of curved line on stage left and Jack's mother would stand stage right.
